The story on this CD is sort of a chain of spontaneous ideas and reactions. Marc Breitfelder and Jack Cook (from Seattle) played together as streetmusicians. Next thing Marc did was making a telephone call to producer Tom Ripphahn to ask him to produce a new CD. This was enough to set things in motion. On a very short notice things were arranged and with a band of high skilled musicians it took only 3 nights to record this juwel. In the studio an "old fashioned" setting was used whereby the musicians played live in also "old fashioned" Neumann microphones, and even more important, had eye contact and played together thus being able to react on anything anyeone did. This gives the final result a real live-like character. </li>

stone will have ears, that's for sure!

Born out of the Kiel blues scene, which is lovingly documented by producer Marc Breitfelder in the lavish booklet accompanying this set, the GerMANs is a loose aggregation of musicians, consisting of Detlef Reimers on vocals and guitar, Marc himself (almost stealing the show with some outstanding playing in a variety of styles) on harmonica and Georg Schroeter on piano and vocals, Jan Mohr, Jack Cook or Daffy Deblitz on guitars. The warm-voiced Detlef is the only constant player throughout and the approach, as one might expect, is wonderfully diverse, from a folksy, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee inspired cover of John Mayall?s 1969 single ?Don?t Waste My Time? and an accomplished, achingly wistful blues rendering of Bob Dylan?s ?Don?t Think Twice? to a good old-fashioned rocking and rolling rendition of Big Boy Crudup?s ?Mean Old Frisco? and the Cajun flavoured rocker ?Come On Down?. In between these two extremes are a lovely jug-band styled version of Jazz Gillum?s ?Crazy About You?, a couple of ?classic blues? items, some raggy East Coast styled playing and tougher Mississippi inflected numbers. </li>

Von Wolfgang Sack wurden wir auf diesen unglaublichen Musiker aufmerksam gemacht. György Ferenczis Virtuosität ist unantastbar, gewissermaßen. Darüberhinaus spielt der Mann auch noch Geige und er singt. Die Musik?Nicht wirklich einzuordnen, Ferenczi ist Ungar und die Einflüsse der ungarischen Volksmusik sind unverkennbar. Die Bluesharp bleibt immer bluesig dabei, vielleicht k?nnte man auch eine Countryharp draus machen. Der absolute Koffer ist die Persiflage auf James Browns "I feel good", Titel 12 auf der CD. Wirklich empfehlenswert, jedoch nichts für Harper mit schwachem Selbstwertgefühl. </li>

Until recently, jazz has been an idiom largely neglected by harp players, for several reasons. First, there haven't been many players with the technical ability needed to play modern jazz, and until very recently, most people with that ability were interested exclusively in classical styles. In addition, the harp itself is not designed in a way that makes jazz easy to play. Jazz requires a smooth, legato attack, and accents in a jazz line can fall on any part of the beat. It's hard to play the harp legato becauseof constant breath shifts, and even harder to accent freely. That's why some very skilled harp players have said that they doubt that it's possible to play jazz on the harp.
Richard Hunter doesn't agree. He majored in music at Harvard University before working with a variety of jazz and rock bands. He says of 'Jazz Harp':'It was meant to inspire harmonica players to reach for the same goals as their counterparts on other instruments'.
